Paddock to Plate: Merilli Angus Beef | Fleurieu Peninsula
When you stay at Merilli1885, you’re stepping into a working landscape, not a styled version of country life, but the real thing.
We’ve been running Angus cattle on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, for many years now. The work happens quietly in the background when guests aren’t here and continues exactly the same way when they are. Seasons don’t pause for bookings. The cattle still need checking. The fences still need maintaining. The land still needs care.
Merilli Angus is our working cattle operation, run across three properties on the Fleurieu Peninsula, from Tooperang to Currency Creek and also on Hindmarsh Island. In total, we manage more than 1,100 acres of land and a herd of approximately 300 Angus cattle. It’s a long-term commitment to doing things properly. No shortcuts. No industrial feedlots. No pretending this is something it isn’t.
How We Work
Our cattle are born on our properties, raised on open pasture, and spend their lives grazing across carefully managed paddocks. They’re not props or a backdrop to accommodation, they’re central to how this land is used and cared for.
Merilli Angus is a legitimate paddock-to-plate beef operation in South Australia, focused on quality Angus genetics, animal health and calm, low-stress handling. The herd is managed day in, day out by Richard, who works across all properties, reading seasons, moving cattle thoughtfully, maintaining fences, and managing land sustainably for the long term.
When you stay at the cottage, what you’re seeing isn’t curated or scheduled. It’s real farm life unfolding, cattle moving between paddocks, quiet work done steadily, and land managed with patience and respect.
From Paddock to Plate
We offer Merilli Angus grass-fed beef directly to people who care where their food comes from not just the breed or the region, but the actual places and people behind it.
Our beef is grass-fed, raised without growth hormones, and processed locally on the Fleurieu Peninsula. We sell by the quarter, half, or whole side, delivered to your door as freezer-ready cuts. You receive a mix of cuts — premium steaks, slow-cook cuts, roasts, sausages and mince.
Nothing wasted. Nothing rushed. Nothing overcomplicated.
Just honest, ethically raised Angus beef from cattle that lived well, moved freely, and were raised with care across healthy, productive land.
Why It Matters
There’s a difference between meat that comes from a supply chain and beef that comes from land you know.
Guests often tell us they feel different here, they sleep better, slow down, breathe more deeply. That sense of wellbeing comes from the same principles that guide how we raise our cattle: space, consistency, low stress, and respect for natural rhythms.
You can stay in our private heritage cottage on the Fleurieu Peninsula, watch cattle grazing in the paddocks, walk the land, and understand how it’s managed. Then, if you choose, take home beef from the same operation.
You know the animal was raised well because you’ve seen how it lived. You know it was handled properly because you know us. You understand the land because you’ve experienced it.
That’s what paddock to plate really means , it’s not just a marketing phrase, but a clear, traceable connection between land, animal and table.
How to Order
Merilli Angus beef is available to customers who are comfortable buying in bulk — a quarter beast or more — and who value quality, transparency and using the whole animal.
This isn’t about one-off steaks. It’s about filling a freezer, planning meals, and rediscovering cuts that suit slower cooking and everyday eating.
It’s how beef was bought before supermarkets narrowed our choices. You receive the best cuts, the everyday cuts, and everything in between.
